What we learned at CANTO 2025

Jan Mooijman
CEO at PXSWe had a great time at CANTO 2025! It was our third attendance to the conference, and it was an absolute pleasure to reconnect with our partners in the region. So much is happening: from exciting new PXS projects to be launched, to the regulatory and compliance challenges the industry is working on.
Let me share the key take aways of this 40th CANTO Annual Conference and Trade Exhibition!
Off net charges
On and off net calls were a big topic of conversation. Especially with number portability, consumers often don’t know when they’re calling outside their network, as number prefixes no longer tell the respective network. Our Public Number Information Service (a new and readily available module of the Number Portability Clearinghouse) shows the current network for any number.
The regulator of Trinidad and Tobago, TATT, recently made this module available to the public.
Data Sovereignty
Data ownership was an important theme of the key notes. In our field of business, the illegitimate trade in number portability data causes concern. This data is an asset owned by the operators and can’t be used or sold by third parties without their joint consent. Our new Number Lookup Gateway gives operators control over number portability data access. That prevents fraud and improves call and SMS success rates while recovering portability costs.
Central portability hub
As number portability expands to more countries, we see a clear need for operators to seamlessly connect to the market’s Number Portability Clearinghouse. This is especially true when operators are active in multiple markets. Our Number Portability Gateway allows operators to manage all their porting jurisdictions through a single solution.
Number portability coming to new markets soon
We discussed ongoing NPC implementations with the respective regulatory authorities, Ministers and involved operators in multiple Caribbean markets. While most of these projects are managed remotely by all stakeholders through a proven way of working, CANTO 2025 was an excellent opportunity to connect and discuss progress in person. Learn more about our project methodology in this blog.
Numbering Plan
We introduced the Number Management System to several regulators, a centralized solution to securely manage the national numbering plan. To guarantee interoperability and assure call and SMS success rates, it’s crucial to accurately inform national and international stakeholders of numbering changes. It also provides a solid framework for number portability. We are pleased to see that multiple regulators are currently implementing our NMS.
Public awareness is key
We discussed how public awareness is crucial when launching new services like number portability. Technologies alone aren’t enough for success. Consumers should know of their existence, functionalities and how use the solution to their benefit.
It was an eye-opener to hear first-hand what partners are prioritizing, and we’re excited to turn our discussions into action. To the CANTO Caribbean team, our dear partners, and all hosts: thanks for having us! We’re proud to be part of the CANTO family.
See you next year!
